Cameron Mertens Remembered After 18-Year-Old Watkins Teen Dies During June 1 Fishing Trip on Pleasant Lake in Corinna Township
The Watkins community mourns Cameron Mertens, an 18-year-old who died after a fishing trip on Pleasant Lake in Corinna Township on June 1, 2026.
Authorities said emergency responders received a call around 8:18 p.m. near the public access and dock on the lake’s north side, where deputies found an overturned kayak close to shore.
Investigators said Cameron had been fishing alone from a kayak about 75 to 100 yards from the dock before falling into the water.
Several people near the shoreline alerted others when Cameron did not resurface, and emergency crews began a search.
The Wright County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team later located and recovered Cameron, and authorities pronounced Cameron deceased.
Family, friends, classmates, and neighbors continue to remember Cameron for warmth, kindness, and a positive presence.
Memorial service details will be announced later, and the family will share obituary and funeral service information soon.
